Secrets, Magic, and a Dangerous Court

Annie Anderson’s writing style is smooth, and the story maintains a good pace. The book focuses mainly on atmosphere, tension, and romance. Anderson portrays the chemistry between the characters naturally, without it feeling forced. The steamy scenes are subtle, not excessive, and well-placed. She also creates a threatening atmosphere, which adds a constant sense of suspense.
The chapters alternate between Kieran and Merrit, giving insight into their thoughts, feelings, and actions. This allows the reader to follow the growth of both characters, both toward each other and individually. A unique aspect of Merrit is that she cannot speak, while almost everyone in this world knows sign language. Many characters also believe she cannot hear, which makes them feel safe to speak freely. The ancient bond between Merrit and Kieran is not particularly original, but it does not detract from the story.
‘A Silence of Shadows’ is a standalone book, but the series is connected through the shared world, adding an extra layer for readers who wish to continue.

Dan ontketent zich een oud magisch bond en wordt de grens tussen spel en verlangen steeds dunner.
De schrijfstijl van Annie Anderson is prettig en het verhaal heeft een goed tempo. Het boek richt zich vooral op beleving, spanning en romantiek. Anderson beschrijft de chemie tussen de personages op een natuurlijke manier. De spicy scènes zijn subtiel, niet overdreven en goed geplaatst. Daarnaast weet Anderson een dreigende sfeer te creëren, waardoor de spanning voelbaar blijft.
De hoofdstukken wisselen tussen Kieran en Merrit, waardoor je hun gedachten, gevoelens en acties goed meemaakt. Dit laat de ontwikkeling van beide personages zien, zowel naar elkaar toe als op persoonlijk vlak. Een bijzonder aspect van Merrit is dat ze niet kan praten, terwijl bijna iedereen in deze wereld gebarentaal kan. Bovendien denken veel personages dat ze ook niets kan horen, waardoor men zich veiliger voelt om dingen te zeggen. De eeuwenoude bond tussen Merrit en Kieran is niet origineel, maar dit stoort helemaal niet.
‘A Silence of Shadows’ is een opzichzelfstaand verhaal, maar de serie is verbonden door dezelfde wereld, wat een mooie extra laag geeft voor wie verder wil lezen.
