‘Watch Me Burn’ is the second book in the ‘Watched in Darkness’ serie. If you haven’t read the first book, ‘Watch Me Break,’ stop here, spoilers ahead.
In ‘Watch Me Burn’, two perspectives are followed once again. Luna, who is head over heels in love with both her wolf and Damien, faces an impossible choice. Should she choose? And can she even do it? At the same time, Damien struggles with a dilemma hanging over him like a dark cloud. Should he confess everything to Luna, or continue as he has been? But that path no longer seems open.
V.E. Huntley’s writing is highly readable, keeping the story engaging from beginning to end. Alongside the erotic scenes, lighter moments alternate with unexpected bursts of tension. Huntley portrays doubt, sorrow, and desire in a way that feels believable and sometimes painfully real.
Where ‘Watch Me Break’ focused mainly on attraction and discovery, ‘Watch Me Burn’ pushes the characters to their limits. Luna’s internal struggle is tangible: her longing, instincts, and fear of losing what she barely dares to hold on to. Huntley strongly emphasizes the psychological aspect of trust and connection.
Damien forms the counterpart. Protective, reserved, and sometimes almost self-destructive in his silence. His dilemma makes him vulnerable and human. The author shows how secrets can protect, but also slowly burn what you hold dear. The alternating perspectives create a rhythm that balances passion and tension, while the world around Luna and Damien feels more vivid, dangerous, and darker than in the first book.

In ‘Watch me Burn’ worden opnieuw twee perspectieven gevolgd. Luna, die tot over haar oren verliefd is op haar wolf én op Damien, staat voor een onmogelijke keuze. Moet ze kiezen? En kán ze dat eigenlijk wel? Tegelijk worstelt Damien met een dilemma dat als een donkere wolk boven hem hangt. Alles opbiechten aan Luna of toch zwijgen en doorgaan zoals hij deed? Maar die weg lijkt niet langer open te staan.
De schrijfstijl van V.E. Huntley leest zeer vlot en het verhaal houdt je van begin tot eind geboeid. Naast erotische scènes worden luchtige momenten afgewisseld met scènes waarin de spanning onverwacht omhoogschiet. Huntley beschrijft twijfel, verdriet en verlangen op een manier die geloofwaardig voelt en soms pijnlijk echt.
Waar ‘Watch me Break’ vooral draaide om aantrekking en ontdekking, duwt ‘Watch me Burn’ de personages naar hun grenzen. Luna’s innerlijke strijd is voelbaar: haar verlangen, haar instinct, haar angst om te verliezen wat ze nog nauwelijks durft vast te houden. Huntley legt hier sterk de nadruk op het psychologische aspect van vertrouwen en verbondenheid.
Damien vormt daarbij de tegenpool. Beschermend, terughoudend en soms bijna destructief in zijn zwijgen. Zijn dilemma maakt hem kwetsbaar en menselijk. De auteur laat zien hoe geheimen niet alleen beschermen, maar langzaam kunnen verbranden wat je lief is. Door de wisselende vertelperspectieven ontstaat een ritme dat balanceert tussen hartstocht en dreiging, terwijl de wereld om Luna en Damien tastbaarder, gevaarlijker en donkerder wordt dan in deel één.
